Drowning and Near-Drowning Facts

Drowning is and has been the 2nd Leading Cause of Unintentional Injury Related Death among Children, in the United States! Almost 1,500 children under the age of 20 years old, die each year from drowning in America! For every drowning death there are at least four near-drowning incidents, which result in permanent neurological disabilities!

Thirty-nine percent of all drowning incidents were in private and public pools. Thirty-seven percent occurred in (open bodies of water) such as ponds, lakes and rivers. In eighty-eight percent of these drowning incidents that occurred, the victims were under some type of supervision. In other words, there was someone close by, but was unsuccessful in saving the child's life!

It is very alarming to see that adults drown in (open waters) just as much as children do! The only difference is grown-ups should know better, but again accidents do happen! Research does show that alcohol is a major contributor in a lot of adult drowning incidents, but not all of them, by no means! It is very heartbreaking to read about parents who have drowned, while trying to save their own child from drowning, and very often both child and parent end up drowning. I guess you can say that these are some facts about adult drowning!
